Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool in the Summer Heat

In our last blog, we warned of the danger of heatstroke in dogs as the summer extreme temperature descends upon us here in Antelope Valley. We are Antelope Valley Animal Hospital and are dedicated to the health and happiness for your pets. Here are some tips to help keep your dog cool in the summer heat and safe from heatstroke.

Plenty of Water

  • The Mojave Desert is a hostile climate and the brutality of the heat in the summertime can be eased by access to adequate water.

  • If your dog stays outside during the day, make sure they have multiple water sources, in case one gets spilled, drunk, or dirty.

  • A hard plastic kiddie pool filled with water is a great way to make sure your dog has adequate drinking water as well as a place to cool their paws or even lay in when the temperatures soar.

Cool Treats

  • Dogs love cool treats!

  • You can make your own in a popsicle mold using chicken broth and chew sticks

  • A fillable chew toy with peanut butter and put it in the freezer overnight also makes a great cool treat for your dog.

Time Your Walks

  • If you walk your dog first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening, they’ll be able to go farther and have more fun.

  • The midday heat is no place for a furry dog to try to get exercise.

  • The heat of the ground is something you should also consider when walking your dog.

  • If you know of a grassy spot to let them romp, choose it over a walk on the superheated asphalt.
