Pet Evacuation Readines

As we have been so effectively reminded, most recently by the Sand Fire which started on July 22, wildfires can happen anywhere and at any time. The Sand Fire went from just the ignition point to having burned an estimated 3,300 acres in less than 8 hours. The current drought conditions, a temperature of 110 degrees that day as well as 15-mile-an-hour winds helped stoke that fire which, at writing, has burned 48,432 acres. It is currently 98 percent contained, but the final burned acreage is not yet known. During peak need, residents and animals from the fire zone were evacuated to the Red Cross center in Palmdale. Next time it could be the residents of Palmdale, Antelope Valley or Lancaster who need to flee. We know you want to make sure your animals are safe, too, so here are some tips to keep in mind.

Evacuation Kit

If you live in a potential fire zone (pretty much everywhere in California until the drought is over), you should have an evacuation kit for your pets. Get a Rubbermaid bin and fill it with the following items:

  • Pet vaccination records and any pertinent medical information. Make sure that the current rabies tag is attached to your pet’s collar.

  • Any and all pet medications for illnesses and regular heartworm prevention etc., medications.

  • Food and water for five to seven days. Don’t forget to include some treats!

  • Extra harnesses and leashes.

  • While they may not fit in the bin, keep pet carriers nearby.

  • Kitty litter box, liners, and a scoop.

  • Dog waste bags.

  • Any grooming supplies you would need over the period of a week or so.

  • A blanket or dog bed to help your pet deal with the stress of being displaced.

  • Current photos of your animals in case they can not be found.

  • A list of phone numbers, including the vet and friends who might be willing to take you or your pets in until the danger has passed.

  • A list of hotel chains that are pet-friendly.

Keep your bin in a place that is convenient to leaving, such as by the back door. It is also a good idea to create a buddy system in your area. Trade house keys with some neighbors and create a list of who has what pets so you and your neighbors can help each other when danger threatens.
