5 Critical Reasons To Spay Or Neuter Your Animals

Welcome back to the Antelope Valley Animal Hospital blog. We will answer questions and talk about some of the most popular topics that we are seeing at our veterinary care center in Palmdale. Our animal hospital knows how much people love their family pets, so we want to make sure that we are getting relevant and interesting information out to our readers. We will answer frequently asked questions within our blog, as well. Thus, we  increase their exposure and likelihood that you, see the questions and answers. In our last post, addressed general pet health and the age for spaying/neutering. To finish off this blog post, we have another frequently asked question around spaying and neutering, but it requires far more depth than the previous question.

Why should I have my pet spayed/neutered?

“The obvious answer is to help control the pet population, but many people are unaware that, the best answer is your pets health. Unaltered pets have an increased risk of medical issues such as:”

  • Male dogs and cats have an increased chance of prostate disease and cancer.

  • Female dogs have an increased chance of mammary tumors, uterine and ovarian cancers and a uterine infection known as pyometria. Females spayed before the first heat cycle (which occurs at approximately 6 months) significantly reduce the chance of these hormone related diseases.

  • Male dogs and cats tend to roam more often than those that are unaltered.

  • Male cats tend to spray and mark their territory causing unwanted odors.

  • Training can become more difficult in male dogs.
